Can Porn Really Be Feminist?

I recently viewed the TV series “Hot Girls Wanted: Turned on” Episode 1 on Netflix . After watching the first episode, I was left with a question: Can feminist porn actually be considered feminist?

I have many thoughts about this topic. Based on my learning in this class and research I have completed outside the class I have found many analysis of porn and the majority of porn still objectifies women.

From watching the first episode of Hot Girls Wanted: Turned on, I learned the importance to have female porn, which is to combat the inequity in the film industry. This was explained in many ways. First, directors in porn industry are mainly male, and second this leads to the majority of porn being made from a male perspective. The issues with porn being created from a male perspective are how women are mistreated, humiliated, and insulted which is seen as normal or acceptable. This also affects the male viewers and perceptions of society, which is influenced in many media and film examples through this e-portfolio.

This issue stems from how men and women are not being seen as being equal in porn, but rather conquests or objects for men’s sexual desires. Therefore this issue creates the question of sexuality and gender. In class we discussed the reading “Pornography, Women and Feminism: Between Pleasure and Politics,” by Ciclitira. This perspective explains how porn remains a male discourse even from a feminist perspective. However in my opinion a feminist perspective in porn is positive and should be supported because this perspective may not be seen in mainstream media and film, but the goal for creating feminist porn is to create an equal perspective in porn will change power relations.
