POO-POURIE is Gendered and Sexist

Poo-Pourri is a spray that promises to eliminate odors when women use the washroom. The main issue with the product Poo-Pourrie is how it’s targeted towards women. The sexist and gendered issue with this product is that men are allowed to embrace biology where as women are suppose to hide it.

Though out  this course I have learned women have been held to unrealistic beauty standards. But the need to have better-smelling poop has created more pressure!

Based on course content Poo-Pourries media advertisement has many effects for women. The media creates many problems, which involves stereotypical roles. The effects of creating gender roles create many different messages. Poo-Pourries is influencing gender roles and portraying women in a certain way. This form of media creates gender oppression because of the inaccurate gender stereotypes. This is emphasized in Poo-Pourrie when the main character states getting Poo-Pourrie will save your relationship, meaning your partner will break up with you if they smell your poop. In class we discussed a historic dish soap advertisement , which stated if you don’t use our dish soap you wont have soft hands and therefore your husband will cheat on you with your neighbour.

I previously thought films were depicting women differently in the present. Although from completing the readings and this media example it is apparent women in the past and present are being portrayed in very stereotypical and narrow roles, which was explained in the Smith and Tuchman readings.
